Stewart McPherson tracks Down Vale players of the days gone by
Name Kevin Taylor
Date of Birth 10th Feb 1970
Occupation Run my own Sports Video Analysis Business
Briefly outline your football career prior to joining Deveronvale
I played in the local Welfare League for Banff Rovers in their first ever squad of players until I was whisked away for a life of wine, women and song at the Vale!! .
Which year(s) did you play for Deveronvale? Who signed you for the club, and what attracted you to join ??
I joined the Vale in 1986 and played till 1991. I was signed by the legend himself, Julius 'The numbers game' Morrison. I'd always wanted to play for my local Highland League Club and I was also badly needed to be Alan Mair's interpreter for the Aberdeen lads Julius was bringing in!! Sorry Mairy!!
What are your fondest memories of playing for Vale ?
"There really are lots of magic memories most of which can't really be shared on a family football website!! (Ask Mr Banff when he's boozy about the legendary wild parties at The Brig Inn for starters!! Only funnin Lawrence o' Kemnay!!) I met lots of great pals I still keep in touch with like Nige 'barber's fleer' Montgomery and of course Mr Banff - EGG!!
Joking aside, the away trips North when we had a right laugh on the bus back home, and Saturdays somehow merged into Sunday night Karaoke at the Brig Inn will never be forgotten!!
A classic night was my 21st. birthday party in Aberdeen when all the lads took over the Flying Painter's local social club and I'm not sure if he was ever allowed back!!
" .
What is the most memorable game you played in for Vale ?
Two games that spring to mind are beating Peterhead when they were league champions at Princess Royal Park in 1988, inflicting upon them their first defeat of the season, and in front of Ernie Walker, David Will etc.
Also when I played against (or should I say chased shadows against) a very strong Rangers side that included Trevor Francis, Robert Fleck, Chris Woods and even a soon to be released Eoin Jess!! They ran rings round us but it was an unforgettable experience.
I also scored a 2 yard screamer to beat Lossiemouth in the last few minutes at Princess Royal which gives me a laugh when I think back. One of my mates worked at the Green Final and put me on the headlines on the back page and it sounded as if it was a beezer and not a wee tap-in but I wasn't complaining!! ( We all remember the celebration moonwalk as well Kevin - Ed. )
Who were the characters at the club ?
There were lots of characters: Willie Sha and his magic sponge! Mimie the cook! Mad Maurice! The Valley Crew of course!! Also, Rico and Glenday took a bit of beating as did Dinky, Pirie and Chubber at their drunken worst!! I'll never forget Allan Forbes putting Chubber's lights out as we got off the bus at Banff after having been pestered for hours by him!! Hilarious!!
Who were the best players you played with at the Vale ?
Nigel Montgomery for his football brain and commitment and loyalty to the Vale. I was a very proud man and really delighted for Nigel when I watched him lift the league title in 2003/2004. There was no one more deserving!
Joe McAllan - A class act and still able to cruise through games as sweeper well into his 40's ( and 'bigger' than Forbies would you believe!!!!)
And who were the best players you played against ?
Billy Ferris ( Ross County )- Old fashioned flying winger who always gave us problems.
Charlie Christie ( Caley )- Extremely quick and one of the best finishers I played against.
What have you done in a football sense since you left the Vale ?
I went to San Francisco straight after the Vale where I played at a reasonable standard and played for Ottawa Royals in Canada for a couple of summer seasons in between coaching football at a high school in San Francisco.
I then trained to become a P.E. Teacher in Glasgow and played for Jordanhill P.E. College during my studies and then Exeter University where I finished my teacher training.
I continued to play in London but was turning to coaching a lot more and coached both the Islington and Camden and London schools district sides. The talent in inner London was amazing and included guys like Joe Cole and Jermaine Defoe so was a great level to be coaching at.
.
What does a normal Saturday afternoon entail for you these days ?
I stay in Edinburgh now so if I am not away working I still like to get along to watch Aberdeen FC wherever they might be playing or if I am up in the Banff area I take in the mighty Vale of course.
