Name Stuart Gray
Date of Birth 22 January 1985
Occupation Production Operator WGE
Briefly outline your football career prior to joining Deveronvale.
Deveron Boys where my old man Ally Gray taught me some of his admired skills!! Onto Banff Academy, then onto S-Forms with Hibernian FC. Finished school and went full-time with Ross County FC before making the return to the Vale.
Which year(s) did you play for Deveronvale? Who signed you for the club, and what attracted you to join ?
I joined the Vale in 2003 and left for Turriff United in 2006. It was Gregg Carrol who signed me. It was Gregg’s ambition that really attracted me to the club and the fact it was my hometown team.
What are your fondest memories of your time with the club?
With players like Molby, Daz ‘Demo/In the Banffie every week’ McAllister, Ryan Pressley and Levi Stephen there was always a few goings on. One of the funniest things that happened was an away game to Wick. We went back into the changing rooms after the game and half the gear had been knicked! The majority of lads only had rain jackets to wear on the way home – what a sight that bus was! Then Richie Sharp started pouring wine on Barrie Stephen and it all kicked off!!
Another wee story that has already appeared is the Dave Henderson story at Peterhead. I’m sure McAllister has it on his page but honestly it was one of the funniest things I have seen!
Brems ‘As a Team’ shouts!
Lenny Binnie and Gregg’s barnies at Monday night training!
There was also a lad who liked to acquire a few things on his way home from nights out – gnomes, frogs, bikes, Tractors!!!! I won’t name him but you know who you are!!
And the Wednesday night bus journeys training in Aberdeen – many a night people were shocked by bare butts from the van door!!
What is the most memorable game(s) you played in for Vale, and why?
Games away to the Broch were always good, the Brochers were always giving you pelters but when you beat them it was worth it.
Away to Partick Thistle in pre-season! One of the worst games of my life – check the tape or ask the boys!!
Games against Buckie – always a sending off, tasty encounters!!
Who were the characters at the club ?
Lenny Binnie – What a legend! Always had a story for you, but what a grafter!
Gregg Carrol – Although he could tear you to shreds, he was also the best manager I had played under.
Molby –The biggest menace on and off the park you could ever meet!
Rab Broon – Topper of a guy and the player you really wanted on your team – a real winner.
Scotty Anderson – Always gave good advice.
Daz McAllister – Top, top lad who ended up being my best man - Not a lot to say about his playing side cause all he ever did was argue with the ref and nail boys!! Only kidding, a really good player and good banter in the dressing room!
Levi Stephen – He was a really good player, but had a few bad Versace shirts and prototype boots!
Ryan Pressley – Hard as nails! Really nice guy and good player – liked a wind up !
Who were the best players you played with at the Vale and why?
Molby - for his goals, could score out of nothing.
Mike – His overall ability is outstanding, the best player I played with.
Chiz - for his workrate and goals.
Scotty Anderson – Great to play alongside and always had great advice.
Dougal, and Dippy for their defence!
McAllister - for never stopping running – ever! But a cracking player as well!
Yogi – Another player who is one of the most skilful players I have played with, also a top guy.
Rab Broon – What a player! Solid in midfield, was lucky to play with him.
Terry Kidd – Great player and a good mate.
And who were the best players you played against, and why?
Neil Maclean ( Inverurie Locos ) – Cracking winger with great pace.
Michael Stephen ( Fraserburgh ) – All round player who always gave us problems.
What have you done in a football sense since you left the Vale ?
Signed for Turriff Utd, played two seasons with them then tore my cruciate and haven’t played since.
What does a normal Saturday afternoon entail for you these days ?
Shopping with the wife and baby, maybe catch a Deveronside game or get in a round of golf.
