Stewart McPherson tracks Down Vale players of the days gone by
upload image w=200 h=185
Name Ian Grant
Date of Birth  12 April 1968
Occupation Business Manager with Clydesdale Bank, based in Inverurie, but covering most of Aberdeenshire
Briefly outline your football career prior to joining Deveronvale.
Played for numerous amateur sides in Aberdeen and a couple of Junior sides.
Alan Scott plucked me from the low point of the now defunct Inverurie Juniors side.
Which year(s) did you play for Deveronvale? Who signed you for the club, and what attracted you to join ?
Joined in September 1995, I think, and left at the end of season 1998/99.
Alan Scott signed me after a couple of Aberdeenshire League games.
Attraction to sign, no brainer really as I was playing for Inverurie Juniors at the time, and, lets say being a keeper I was very busy most Saturdays!!
What are your fondest memories of your time with the club?
The fondest memory would have to be the Albion Rovers game in the Scottish Cup. Made a couple of decent saves that were highlighted on Sportscene. Also all the coverage the club got following the draw giving ourselves or Keith a home tie with Rangers.
Obviously it was a big disappointment to lose the replay after being on top during the first game.

Also played on the losing side of a couple of Aberdeenshire Cup Finals.

Funny story would be the “wise” decision to have a night out in Wick following a game.
2 miles outside Wick, on the way home on the Sunday, everyone was a bit hungover and a certain player (Ok you’ve pushed me it was Lee Will!!) threw up in the mini bus.
The stench was unbearable and it is remarkable that no one else followed suit.
I will never forget the sight of Stuart Bell forcing his head out the 3 inch gap of the hinged window at the back of the minibus.
What is the most memorable game(s) you played in for Vale, and why?
Albion Rovers game, obviously and playing an Aberdeen XI in the final of the Aberdeenshire Cup on my 30th birthday.

Any game where I have played particularly well.

Games against Fraserburgh, during my time we had a bit of a hoodoo over them and would regularly beat them when they were beating everyone else.

Think (?) my final game was against Elgin in the league at BB. Sticks in my mind as I had a bit of a falling out with Malcolm Murray during the game and handed him the gloves just as Elgin were taking a corner!! Not the best way to endear myself to the manager.
Who were the characters at the club ?
The old changing rooms and showers (do they count??) They were poor!!
The Dundee contingent had to be watched closely.
Who were the best players you played with at the Vale and why?
Steve Dolan, he had been there for years even when I was playing. Great left foot.
Rattray’s timing was usually fairly good.
Eddie Wolecki certainly knew where the goal was, as did Mr Heggie.
And who were the best players you played against, and why?
Gary Whyte and Martin Stewart at Huntly, seemed to score against us for fun.
Ian Polworth at Elgin always played well against us.

Never liked playing at Cove, small pitch so could never really relax during the game.
What have you done in a football sense since you left the Vale ?
Played for Sunnybank for part of a season, also a couple of years at Stoneywood, and a couple of games for Locos. But not much in the last few years.

Still waiting for the phone to ring for an old timers game!!
What does a normal Saturday afternoon entail for you these days ?
Golf or out with family, have 3 kids, Joe 12, Katie 8 and Holly 3. They are enough to keep anyone busy.
Occasionally watch Aberdeen.
