Turriff United 2-1 Deveronvale
Scorers: Noble 24, Bowden 43, Mair 70
Ross Jack got exactly what he asked for from his players for Christmas - a win and thee points against Deveronvale. The Turriff boss fresh from signing a contract extension this week was without the services of nine regulars but his side still had enough in their stocking to get one over their local rivals.
Grant Noble had Steve Dolan's side one up before Cammy Bowden equalised on the stroke of half-time but the second period wasn't such an even contest and the patched-up homesters did more than enough to win the encounter although missed opportunities almost came back to haunt like the spirit of Christmas past.
Graeme Watt replaced Paul Sutherland in Dippy's starting eleven, Sutherland wasn't 100% fit to start on the wing while Scott Begg returned to centre mid for the Vale who were looking to build on their five-nil win over Rothes last Saturday.
Grant Noble, back on his old stomping ground, had the first attempt in this derby fixture but Kevin Main was right behind the strikers low strike while Paul Young watched on at the opposite end as his side-footer from a good 25-yards just failed to nestle in Grant Pennet's postage stamp corner.
The visitors grabbed the lead midway through the half, a strong run from Callum Murray saw the winger play in Graeme Watt who in turn found Dane Ballard and his cut-back was perfectly weighted for strike partner Grant NOBLE who tucked the ball beyond Kevin Main from around six-yards to complete a great team counter.
Five minutes later Steven Fraser had home keeper Main at full stretch as the centre back let fly from 25-yards and with Vale taking confidence from their opener Scott Begg just failed to keep his shot down from distance.
Just two minutes of the half remaining Turrif equalised, Antonio Vastano's deep free kick from the left flank was misjudged by Grant Pennet allowing Cammy Bowden a free header at the back post and the home skipper duly took his chance as he headed into the unguarded net.
Vale just about had time to nudge ahead once more before the Dan McFarlane's whistle sounded but Lewis Dunbar couldn't quite find the top corner after driving into the Turra penalty area and watching Kevin Main throw himself to his right in an effort to prevent his rising shot enter his net. HT
The second forty-five opened with Antonio Vastano's low ball in from the left picking out the near-post run of David Booth who's first-time connection skimmed the side netting as Turriff showed their intent to take the game to the visitors.
James Chalmers then headed over the top after Scott Begg hauled down the impressive Vastano in a dangerous position before Grant Pennet turned Allen MacKenzie's piledriver over the top and from the resultant corner Turriff came close again when Nicky Gray's dipping header was also tipped over the bar by Pennet.
Kenny Mair fired the homeside into a deserved lead when Ross Aitken lost out to a fifty-fifty challenge out on the right with the ball falling into the path of Nicky Gray and although Grant Pennet did well to come quickly off his line and thwart the Turriff number nine the ball broke kindly for Mair who slotted into the open goal.
Although it was all pretty much one-way traffic Grant Noble tried to get his side back into the match but Kevin Main was equal to his left-footed strike from the edge of the penalty area.
Slack defending from the visitors wasn't helping their own cause when substitute Ryan Bruce hit the base of the post and after a mis-kick from Zander Jack Grant Pennet had to throw himself to his right to turn Nicky Gray's deflected effort around his post.
A late flurry from the visitors saw Steven Fraser, Paul Sutherland and Steven Davidson go close but it was too little too late for Steve Dolan's side and although they did have lots of possession and set-pieces a-plenty in the final ten minutes they weren't really able to test Kevin Main in the home sticks.
