BEAVERING BANFFERS NARROWLY LOSE OUT AT THE LODGE

 Formartine United 1-0 Deveronvale

Scorer: Dingwall 38

Formartine picked up their second one nil victory in three days with a hard-fought win over improving Vale.

Calum Dingwall netted the winner during a tight first half when he slammed home from 10-yards after a deep cross into the Vale penalty area wasn't cleared after three attempts by the visiting defence.

The second half saw Grant Pennet pull off a fine stop to deny Neil Gauld while right at the death Steven Davidson tugged an effort wide which would have given the Banffers a deserved share of the spoils.

Steve Dolan was down to the bare bones as his troops headed to mid Aberdeenshire to face title-chasing Formartine United. In fact Dolan and fellow coach Mark Chisholm were named among the substitutes due to lack of numbers, namely the unavailable Liam Forbes, Zander Jack and Graeme Watt while Dan Smith, Scott Fraser and Kevin Adams remain on the treatment table.

Vale kicked off and a quick burst down the left from James McLaren saw the recent signing beat Jonathon Crawford before just failing to pick out strike partner Dane Ballard with a chip into the danger area. McLaren had the ball in the net minutes later but the flag for offside prevented any premature celebrations for the Banff boys.

Neil Gauld had a good chance at the opposite end but fired weakly at Grant Pennet after the clever striker had clipped the ball over the head of Steven Davidson to create the opening.

On the quarter hour a foul on Neil Gauld by Steven Davidson presented Jamie Masson with a set-piece opportunity 25-yards out but Grant Pennet got down well to the number ten's curling effort over the top of the defensive wall to parry for a fruitless corner kick.

Conor Gethins missed the best opportunity of the match to date after 20 minutes when he side-footed past the post after being tee-up by the busy Neil Gauld while a neat move down the other end saw James McLaren undone by Calum Dingwall after picking up a pass from Callum Murray and shaping to shoot.

Graeme Rodger poked the ball at goal from close range which Grant Pennet just managed to stop with his legs before the keeper was called into action once more when Jamie Masson pulled the trigger from distance but again the Vale custodian did just about enough to prevent the opener.

Calum Dingwall opened the scoring seven minutes from the interval when Vale failed miserably to defend a high ball into their danger area even though they had three chances to clear the danger and Dingwall slammed the ball home from 10-yards.

Lewis Dunbar went down in the box within a couple of minutes of the opener but referee Scott Leslie wasn't interested and moments later Andy Reid denied Paul Sutherland with a great piece of goalkeeping after Lewis Dunbar, who hit the side-netting seconds later, had slipped the winger in on goal. HT

James McLaren was a foot high with a lob over Andy Reid as he latched onto Jonathon Crawford's cushioned header back to his keeper while a brilliant tip onto the crossbar from Grant Pennet denied Neil Gauld a second for the homeside.

A driving run from the impressive Lewis Dunbar saw the full-back just miss the target as his rising left-footed strike came back off the rigging behind Andy Reid's goal before James McLaren fired over the top from close range after good strong running from the number 10.

A change for the Vale with twelve minutes remaining saw Ross Aitken replace James McLaren, the change seeing Callum Murray move up top with Aitken slotting in at left mid as Steve Dolan went for broke in an effort to grab a leveller.

Vale indeed did fashion a last-ditch chance to grab a deserved equaliser but the ball off Grant Pennet's launch into the mixer fell to central defender Steven Davidson's weaker right foot and he failed to hit the target with his low strike from 12-yards out.
